Old Serpentine Works

The Old Serpentine Works is located at Carleon Cove, Poltesco, and was once part of an industry unique to the Lizard. Serpentine is a rare rock type found in the Lizard and when cut and polished it rivalled the beauty of marble.

Queen Victoria ordered serpentine pieces for her home on the Isle of Wight and serpentine pieces were shown at the Great Exhibition.

The factory was built in the 1850s and the initials LSC, for the Lizard Serpentine Company, can still be seen on the warehouse building. The factory can be found in the peaceful valley of Poltesco on the Lizard’s east coast.

This historic gem and it’s neighbouring cove is a must-see while hiking the South West Coast Path…
